Azeroth in a New Light

The browser client has a new page in its options: Advanced Graphics. The world is the one you know, model for model and texture for texture. What changes is the light that falls on it.

What you can switch on

  • Real shadows from the sun and the moon: trees, buildings and characters cast them, and they move with the time of day.
  • Light from fire: torches, lanterns, braziers and campfires light the ground and the walls around them, and flicker.
  • Lit interiors: an inn is lit by its own candles and by the daylight through its doors and windows.
  • Mist and sun shafts, a soft glow around bright things, and softer shading in corners and under objects.
  • Better water with waves and reflections, a night sky with stars, rain that wets the ground and wind in the grass.

How to turn it on

Press Escape, open Options, then Advanced Graphics, and pick a Graphics Preset: Low, Medium, High or Ultra. Every effect also has its own switch, so you can keep the ones you like.

Nothing changes until you choose. Everyone starts on Classic, the look the game has always had, and you can go back to it with one click.

A word about speed

These effects ask a lot of the graphics card, and a browser gives a game less of it than an installed program does. On a desktop with its own graphics card High should be comfortable. On a laptop start with Low or Medium and see how it feels. The first time you raise the preset the game may pause for a few seconds while the browser prepares the new effects.

The lighting is built on the open-source work of the benilla community, which we have adapted for the browser. It is new, so if something looks wrong, tell us where in Bug Reports. See it for yourself: play in your browser.
